Noam Chomsky: War and Peace in the Middle East

A Conversation with Ilan Pappé

By Noam Chomsky

The Middle East is a region of great turmoil and conflict. In recent years, the region has been plagued by war, violence, and terrorism. The situation has been made even more complex by the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS). ISIS is a terrorist organization that controls large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria. The group has committed numerous atrocities, including mass murder, rape, and torture. ISIS poses a serious threat to the security of the region.

The United States has been deeply involved in the Middle East for many years. The US has provided military support to Israel, Egypt, and other countries in the region. The US has also intervened militarily in Iraq and Afghanistan. These interventions have had a mixed record of success. The US has succeeded in overthrowing Saddam Hussein in Iraq and the Taliban in Afghanistan. However, the US has also failed to stabilize these countries and has created a power vacuum that has been filled by extremist groups like ISIS.

The US needs to develop a new strategy for the Middle East. The old approach of military intervention has not worked. The US needs to work with other countries in the region to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. The US also needs to address the root causes of the conflict, such as poverty, unemployment, and discrimination.

The Middle East is a complex and challenging region. However, the US has a responsibility to help find a peaceful solution to the conflict. The US can make a difference by working with other countries in the region, addressing the root causes of the conflict, and promoting democracy and human rights.
